PRESERVING, ENHANCING AND DISSEMINATING LANGUAGES
Linguistic diversity is one of the most remarkable aspects of Europe's cultural heritage, providing a source of richness for building up the Union's trade and economy.
"European Year of Languages" was organised in 2001 by the European Union and the Council of Europe. It celebrated linguistic diversity in Europe and emphasised the need, for each European, to learn languages with a view to interacting and understanding other cultures.
Aims of the European Day of Languages:
- to alert the public to the importance of language learning
- to increase awareness and appreciation of ALL the languages spoken in Europe
- to encourage lifelong language learning
Regional and minority languages - they are languages traditionally spoken by a part of the population of Member States of the European Union and also the subject of specific EU activities: a "European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages" and an information network "Mercator". Those two activities receive financial support, while specific projects are geared to the promotion of regional and minority languages, including conferences, cultural events and networking.
The Directorate-General for Translation supports multilingualism in the European Union by providing the Commission with translation services and linguistic advice for its written communication in all official languages, thereby bringing the Union’s policies closer to its citizens and promoting its legitimacy, transparency and efficiency.
Multilingualism is one of the basic principles and key features of the European Union. It guarantees cultural and linguistic diversity, equal treatment between peoples and individuals in Europe.
eTEN is the European Community Programme designed to help the deployment of telecommunication networks based services (e-services) with a trans-European dimension. It focuses strongly on public services, particularly in areas where Europe has a competitive advantage.
