The Ariane programme

The Ariane programme was adopted in 1997 by the European Parliament and the Council for a period of two years (1997-1998), after a trial period in 1996. Then the programme was extended for 1999.
The budget was ECU 11.3 million. During these 2 years 767 projects were financed (880 if we include the trial period).

The aims were:
• to encourage cooperation between Member States in the field of books and reading;
• to support and complement the Member States' action in this field by promoting national cultures while respecting national and regional diversity;
• to promote a wider knowledge and circulation of literary works and history of the European peoples among the citizens of the EU in particular by means of:
• support for the translation of literary works, dramatic works and reference works,
• support for cooperation projects carried out in partnership,
• improvement of the skills of professionals in this field.
The Ariane programme was founded on action in three main areas:
• support for translation (translation grants)
• support for co-operation projects carried out in partnership to promote citizens' access to books and reading
• to improve the skills of professionals working to further mutual knowledge and dissemination of European literature

The Aristeion Prize – is the European literature prize and European translation prize. Prizes are awarded every year in the European City of Culture.

In May 1998 the Commission proposed to establish a First European Community Framework Programme in support of Culture for the period of five years (2000-2004). The aim of the Culture 2000 programme, which combines the old "Ariane", "Kaleidoscope" and "Raphaël" programmes, is to develop a common cultural area by promoting cultural dialogue, knowledge of the history, creation and dissemination of culture, the mobility of artists and their works, European cultural heritage, new forms of cultural expression and the socio-economic role of culture.
